عَبْدُ السَّمِيع

ʿAbd al-Samīʿ

/abd-us-sa-MEEH/

Meaning

Servant of the All-Hearing (one of Allah's 99 names)

Yorùbá Adaptation

Yorùbá form

Abdulsemiu

Ab-dúl-sé-mi-ù

Arabic origin

عَبْدُ السَّمِيع

ʿAbd al-Samīʿ

The Arabic 'ʿAbd al-Samīʿ' was borrowed orally into Yorùbá speech. 'Samīʿ' (سَمِيع) became 'Semiu' through vowel fronting (ā→e) and the addition of a final vowel (common in Yorùbá phonotactics, which disfavours word-final consonants). 'ʿAbd al-' was resyllabified as 'Abdul'.

Islamic Context

Compound of ʿabd (servant) + al-Samīʿ (the All-Hearing, Qur'an 2:127)
